Shropshire Chamber of Commerce is calling on employers across the county to show visible support for the armed forces community during Armed Forces Week 2026, stressing the growing importance of defence, resilience and specialist skills to the UK’s economic stability.

The Chamber is a Gold Award holder under the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme.

It is encouraging organisations of all sizes to acknowledge the vital contribution made by serving personnel, reservists, veterans and military families - not only to national security but to the strength and capability of the UK workforce.

It is encouraging firms to participate by attending, supporting or hosting local events.

The call comes ahead of Armed Forces Week from June 22-27, at a time when the UK armed forces continue to operate around the clock amid rising global instability.

Shropshire Chamber says it is a timely opportunity for businesses to recognise the people who safeguard the security on which economic confidence, supply chain resilience and community wellbeing depend.

Ruth Ross, chief executive of Shropshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “Armed Forces Week is more than a celebration - it is a national moment of recognition and responsibility.

“Every day, members of our Armed Forces protect the freedoms, stability and global partnerships that allow British businesses to thrive. At a time of increasing international uncertainty, it is vital that the business community stands firmly behind those who serve.

“As Gold Award holders of the Employer Recognition Scheme, we know the enormous value veterans, reservists and military families bring to our workforce. Supporting the Armed Forces community strengthens businesses and communities.”

Veterans and reservists bring leadership, adaptability, technical expertise and problem‑solving skills that are increasingly essential in sectors such as engineering, logistics, manufacturing, technology and cybersecurity, she added.

The Chamber was one of just four organisations in the county presented with the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award last summer - the highest badge of honour for employers who champion the Armed Forces community.

To achieve Gold standard, employers must provide at least 10 days of additional paid leave for reservists, and implement HR policies for veterans and cadet force adult volunteers. They must also advocate for defence across their networks and sectors.
